Amarillo College Tutoring for Success Policy:

Tutoring for Success applies to any student whose overall performance in the course falls below 75%. The instructor will create the task in the Student Engagement Portal (Watermark) to direct the student to the appropriate tutoring service, which may be faculty- or SI-led, discipline-specific, and/or general. The tutoring service assigned, the due date for when the tutoring must be completed, and the amount of tutoring required are at the discretion of the instructor. Additionally, the task will alert the student’s success team. Students who do not fulfill the assigned tutoring task may be subject to program- and course-specific penalties that could result in a grade reduction and/or in not being allowed to progress in the course until the tutoring requirement has been satisfied.

Administrative Drop Policy

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete all steps indicated on the Academic Withdrawal Request form by the course withdrawal deadline.

End-of-Course Outcomes: Identify, pronounce, and spell medical terms; use terms in context; build and analyze medical terms; and use medical references as resource tools.

COURSE GOALS:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Analyze medical words by using the tools of word analysis by dividing them into component parts, (prefixes, combining forms, & suffixes), which will enable the student to understand complex terminologyeasier.
2. Relate the medical terms to the structure and function of the human body in the context of how the body works in health and disease.
3. Become proficient in the spelling and pronunciation of medical terminology.

Chapter 2 Terms Pertaining to the Body as a Whole

1. Define terms that apply to the structural organization of the body. Identify the body cavities & recognize the organs contained within those cavities.
2. Locate & identify the anatomical & clinical divisions of the abdomen.
3. Locate and name the anatomical divisions of the back.
4. Identify the terms that describe positions, directions, & planes of the body. Identify the definitions for new word elements & use them to understand new medical terms.

Chapter 3 - Suffixes

1. Define new suffixes & review material presented in previous chapters.
2. Analyze words using new suffixes with combining forms to build & understand terminology.
3. Name & know the functions of the different types of blood cells in the body.

Chapter 4 - Prefixes

1. Define basic prefixes used in the medical language.
2. Analyze medical terms that combine prefixes & other word elements.
3. Discuss the Rh condition as an example of an antigen-antibody reaction.

Chapter 5 - Digestive System

1. Name the organs of the digestive system & describe their locations & other functions.
2. Describe disease processes & symptoms that affect these organs.
3. Define combining forms for organs and the meaning of related terminology using these word parts.

Chapter 6 - Digestive System Suffixes and Terminology

1. Define new suffixes & use them with digestive system combining forms.
2. List & explain laboratory tests, clinical procedures, & abbreviations common to the digestive system.
3. Apply new knowledge to understanding medical terms in their proper context.

Chapter 7 - Urinary System

1. Name the organs of the urinary system & describe their locations & functions.
2. Define various pathological conditions affecting the urinary system.
3. Recognize the use & interpretation of urinalysis as a diagnostic test.
4. Learn the meaning of combining forms, prefixes, & suffixes of the urinary system.
5. List & explain clinical procedures, laboratory tests, & abbreviations pertaining to the urinary system.

Chapter 8 - Female Reproductive System

1. Name the organs of the female reproductive system, their locations, & combining forms.
2. Explain how these organs & their hormones function in the processes of menstruation & pregnancy.

Chapter 17 - Sense Organs: The Eye and the Ear

Expected Student Behavior

It is the responsibility of the student to access the course on a regular basis, participate and complete required Homework assignments, Studymate Activites, Exam Reviews, Quizzes, Major exams, and the Final Exam.

WITHDRAWING FROM A COURSE:

It is the responsibility of the student to officially drop or withdraw from a course. Failure to officially withdraw may result in the student receiving a grade of "F" in the course.

Students are not automatically dropped from their class roles as a result on non-attendance.

STUDENT GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE:

A student who has a problem with the course or the course instructor should make every attempt to resolve the problem with the course instructor.If that is not successful, the student may appeal the decision of the instructor to the Program Director, Dean (Kim Boyd 354-6060) - Division Committee, Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs, Becky Burton, 806.371.5122, Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Tamara Clunis, 806.371.5226 and Amarillo College President -- IN THAT ORDER. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:

Academic dishonesty shall constitute a violation of the college rules and regulations and is punishable as prescribed by Amarillo College board policies. Academic dishonesty shall include, but is not limited to, cheating on a test, plagiarism, and collusion.

"Cheating on a test" shall include:

• Copying from another student's test paper.

• Using test materials not authorized by the person administering the test.

• Collaborating with or seeking aid from another student during a test without permission from the test administrator/instructor.

• Knowingly using, buying, selling, stealing, or soliciting, in whole or in part, the contents of an administered/unadministered test.

• Substituting for another student, or permitting another student to substitute for one's self, to take a test.

• Bribing another person to obtain an administered / unadministered test or information about an administered / unadministered test.

• Using the course textbook and / or notes is considered CHEATING.

'Plagiarism" shall be defined as the appropriating, buying, receiving as a gift, or obtaining by any means another's work and the unacknowledged submission or incorporation of it in one's own written work.

"Collusion" shall be defined as the unauthorized collaboration with another person in preparing written work for fulfillment of course requirements.

Grading Criteria

QUIZZES:

Quizzes will be given over each chapter in the textbook. There are some chapters that will have 2 quizzes.Quiz dates are located on the course syllabus.

Students will need to clickon the CONTENT menu to see the weekly modules.

You will not be able to see the quiz until it is time for the Quiz to open.

The student is responsible for keeping track of quiz and exam dates.

DO NOT depend on the instructor to remind students of the quiz and exam dates.

Time limit for the quizzes will vary from 50 to 60 MINUTES.

Quizzes will OPEN @ 6:00 pm on the assigned date.

Quizzes will CLOSE @ 11:59 pm on the assigned date.

The student will be able to see the quiz grade after the quiz has been submitted.

Each quiz has 100 possible points.

Any student who misses a quiz will receive a grade of zero (0) for the missed quiz.

IF A QUIZ IS MISSED, THERE WILL BE NO MAKEUP QUIZZES.

The quizzes will be worth 10% of your FINAL GRADE.

No quiz grades will be dropped.

Homework Assignments:

There will be homework assigned each week of the course. You will find the assignments located in Blackboard by clicking on the course content. Homework assignments will be for a grade.

Once in the content of the course scroll down and you will find the assignments under each week.

Example: Week 1 will have the homework assignments for Chapters 1&2.Homework assignments must be completed within the Bb course (AC Connect).

Any homework assignment not turn in by the due date will be recorded as a zero for the assignment.

Homework assignment due datesare posted in the syllabus calendar.

There will be no makeups on missed homework assignments.

Homework assignments are worth 10% of the final grade average. No homework assignment grade will be dropped.

Exam Reviews:

There will be an Exam Review Assignment for each module.

Print the attached review, complete the review, and then upload it to dropbox. Exam Reviews must be hand written, no typed reviews will be accepted.

If 100% complete student will earn 5 bonus points for the corresponding exam.

Reviews will be checked for completion by the instructor.

Reviews along with the Homework assignments will prepare the student for the major exams and the final exam.

STUDYMATE:

There are Studymate learning activities in each module for each chapter. The student is required to complete 1 hour in Studymate and uploadscreen shots of atat least3 COMPLETED activities per chapter.

MAJOR EXAMS:

There will be 8 chapter exams. The number of chapters per exam will vary.

It is the student's responsibility to review the course calendar to see when the exam is scheduled.

Each exam is worth 100 possible points.

The student will have 80 minutes to complete an exam.

Exam dates can be viewed on the Online course calendar.

Major Exams will OPEN @ 9:00 am on the assigned date.

Major Exams will CLOSE @ 11:59 pm on the assigned date.

Once an exam is started the clock is running and cannot be paused.

Time limit for Major Examis 80 minutes.

Students will need to download Respondus Lockdown Monitor. Instructions how to download are located on the Institution Page of Blackboard.

Students will need to scroll down about midway to click on Respondus Lockdown Monitor instructions.

The student will need to have a camera on their computer or laptop or an external WebCam.

The student will be able to see the exam grade after the exam has been submitted.

Each exam has 100 possible points.

The lowest major exam grade will be dropped if the student has completed ALL seven (7) major exams AND has completed the Final Exam for the course, as well as in a face-to-face course the student has be presentat least 90% of the classes. The student must attempt ALL seven major exams AND the final in order to have the lowest score dropped.

Complete means all questions have been answered on each exam and the final exam. Any student who scores below 75% on a major exam must complete mandatory tutoring which is an Amarillo College requirement in order to qualify for a dropped major exam grade.

If for any reason a student has not completed ALL seven (7) major exams the missed exam will be recorded as a zero (0) and there will be NO dropped exam grade!

Mandatory Tutoring:

In an effort to increase retention in Allied Health / Nursing courses, any student who scores below a 75% on any exam (excluding the Final Exam week) must complete a mandatory tutoring session with his/her instructor or tutor before taking the next exam. Before receiving a session, students must first schedule a time online with the instructor.

Mandatory sessions will be for60minutes. Tutoring is Mandatory.

Any student who misses an exam will receive a grade of zero (0) for the missed exam.

THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UPS ON MISSED EXAMS.

MAJOR EXAMS ARE WORTH 50% OF THE FINAL GRADE.

FINAL EXAM:

IMPORTANT!...ALL STUDENTS, REGARDLESS OF GRADE POINT AVERAGE, WILL BE REQUIRED TO TAKE THE COMPREHENSIVE FINAL.

The student will have a COMPREHENSIVE FINAL EXAM, WHICH IS WORTH 25% OF YOUR FINAL GRADE.

The Final Exam will be 150 questions.

The Final Exam will cover Chapters 1-18 (Textbook), homework assignments, Studymate, and ExamReviews.

The student will have 2.5 hours OR 150 minutes to complete the Final Exam.

Students will need to download Respondus Lockdown Monitor.

The student will need to have a camera on their computer or laptop or an external WebCam.

If the STUDENT misses the designated time for the FINAL EXAM, a grade of zero (0) will be given for the exam, unless an incomplete has been granted.

Arrangements to receive an incomplete "I" grade for the course must be made prior to the date of the final exam and appropriate documentation given to the instructor.

Incompletes are granted only for emergency situations such as hospitalization of the student, serious injury to the student on the day of the final exam, etc.

Incompletes will not be granted for situations involving vacation plans, appointments, or computer problems, etc.

Attendance

Regular attention to the Course Calendar, Course Syllabus, and the Announcement Page is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Regular attendance and appripate amount of time spent on course assigments is a must to be successful in this course.

Students should check this course in blackboard 2-3times daily in case there has been a change in an assignment, quiz, or exam date. The student must also regullarly check their AC email to class changes and/or updates.

The student should plan to spend at least 10 to 12 hours weekly completing the textbook exercises, homework assignments, studymate activites, and Exam reviewsin order to be successful in this course.
