Menstruation is a natural process, yet every woman experiences it differently. Selecting the right menstrual product is crucial for comfort, hygiene, and overall well-being. Pads, tampons, and period panties each have unique benefits and potential drawbacks. Understanding these can help you make an informed choice based on your needs, lifestyle, and personal preferences.
To understand the differences between each product and which is the right pick, OnlyMyHealth team interacted with Dr Sukirti Jain, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Navi Mumbai, Vashi.
She explains, "When it comes to managing menstruation, there are several options available to women, each with its own set of benefits and potential drawbacks. The most common menstrual products include pads, tampons, and period panties. While these products all serve the same purpose, to absorb menstrual blood, they vary in design, function, and the way they interact with the body. Understanding the pros and cons of each can help you make an informed choice based on comfort, convenience, and health considerations."
1. Pads (Sanitary Napkins)
Pads are one of the most commonly used menstrual products. They are worn in the underwear and come in various sizes, absorbencies, and materials. Dr Jain lists down the pros and cons of sanitary napkins:
Pros:
- Ease of Use: Pads are straightforward to use. Simply adhere the pad to your underwear, and it remains in place for several hours, depending on your flow.
- No Insertion Required: Unlike tampons, pads do not need to be inserted into the body, making them a great choice for those uncomfortable with internal products.
- Comfort: Modern pads use soft, skin-friendly materials that enhance comfort. They also come in different sizes to accommodate varying flow levels.
- Variety: From ultra-thin options for lighter days to extra-long pads for heavy flow, there are numerous choices. Some also have wings to prevent leaks.
Cons:
- Visibility Under Clothing: Pads can feel bulky and may be noticeable under tight-fitting outfits.
- Potential Irritation: Extended wear can lead to chafing, discomfort, or even rashes, especially for those with sensitive skin.
- Environmental Impact: Disposable pads contribute significantly to waste, as they are single-use and take years to decompose.

2. Tampons
Tampons are absorbent products inserted into the vagina to absorb menstrual blood directly. They are widely preferred for their discreetness and convenience. Here are some pros and cons of tampons shared by Dr Jain:
Pros:
- Discreet: As they are worn internally, tampons remain invisible under clothing.
- Comfortable: When inserted correctly, tampons are barely noticeable and allow for easy movement.
- Ideal for Active Lifestyles: Tampons are an excellent choice for sports, swimming, and other physical activities without the worry of leaks.
- Odour Control: Since tampons absorb menstrual blood before it exits the body, they often help in reducing menstrual odour.
Cons:
- Risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS): Although rare, TSS is a serious bacterial infection linked to prolonged tampon use. To lower the risk, tampons should be changed every 4-8 hours and not be left in overnight.
- Insertion Required: Some individuals may feel uncomfortable with inserting a tampon, particularly younger users or those unfamiliar with them.
- Dryness and Irritation: Tampons can sometimes cause vaginal dryness or irritation, particularly if they are left in for too long or used with a lighter flow than needed.
- Environmental Concerns: Like pads, disposable tampons contribute to landfill waste, and some contain synthetic materials that are not biodegradable.
3. Period Panties
Period panties are a reusable menstrual product designed with built-in absorbent layers. They can be worn alone or in combination with tampons or pads for extra protection. Dr Jain helped us jot down some pros and cons of period panties:
Pros:
- Eco-Friendly: One of the biggest advantages of period panties is their sustainability. They reduce waste compared to disposable pads and tampons.
- Comfortable: Designed to feel like normal underwear, they offer a bulk-free, seamless experience.
- No Insertion Required: Ideal for those who prefer non-invasive menstrual products.
- Variety and Style: Available in various styles and absorbencies, period panties cater to different flow levels and fashion preferences.
- Odour Control: Many brands incorporate odour-neutralising technology to keep users feeling fresh.
Cons:
- Higher Upfront Cost: Period panties are more expensive than disposable pads or tampons. However, they last for months or even years, making them cost-effective in the long run.
- Absorbency Limitations: On heavy flow days, period panties may not be sufficient on their own, and some women prefer using them alongside other products for added security.
- Maintenance: Unlike disposables, period panties require proper washing and care, which may not be convenient for everyone.

Choosing the Right Product for You
Every woman’s body and menstrual cycle are different, which means there is no single ‘best’ product for everyone. Your choice should be based on comfort, convenience, lifestyle, and health considerations.
Dr Sukirti Jain advises,"Each menstrual product—pads, tampons, and period panties—offers distinct advantages, and the choice ultimately depends on your preferences, lifestyle, and comfort. If you prioritise ease of use and don’t mind a little bulk, pads may be your best bet. For active individuals or those who prefer a discreet, internal option, tampons are ideal, though they come with some safety precautions. Period panties offer a sustainable, comfortable, and leak-proof solution for those who want a more natural option without dealing with disposables, though they may not be sufficient for everyone’s flow."
It is also a good idea to try different products to see what suits your body and lifestyle best. Some women prefer using a combination, such as tampons during the day and pads or period panties at night.
Regardless of which menstrual product you choose, prioritising safety and hygiene is crucial. Always follow proper usage guidelines, maintain personal hygiene, and consult a healthcare provider if you experience discomfort, infections, or other menstrual health concerns. By making an informed decision, you can ensure a comfortable and hassle-free menstrual experience.
