Critics Consensus

Sympathy for the Devil makes the most of Nicolas Cage's propensity for playing unhinged characters -- and for some viewers, that'll be more than enough to make it worth a watch.

Giorgio G Well, what can I say. We all know Nikolas Cage and that he always acts in the same, same, same old way (if one could actually call this acting). Anyway, yes, there are the moments where he does his always identical screaming, while rolling his eyes, but, I have to admit, the director kept it rather low-key in this flick. Obviously he plays the ruthless maniac and unfortunately way too early one can imagine the background story years back, which lead to the whole setup. One imagines a few scenarios that one has seen in other movies, but when the truth gets unraveled it comes out too quick and too confused to make much sense with too many names being listed, unnecessarily confusing the spectator. Many scenes are undoubtedly extremely unrealistic, and though there is some action before, the director manages to get some real tension into this flick only within the last third, which finally raises the bar of this movie just a little bit above par. I give it a 6/10 or say it's watchable if you don't mind the excessive violence, but it's not a must-see! Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/24/24 Full Review Kyle M Not as intimidatingly crafted at “Collateral” level regarding the spacious usage branching out to further mimic its shrouded mystery that effectively mesmerizes, particularly Cage’s mental embrace intentionally designed to shift and challenge our perception over the eponymous misdirection through the transitional, coherent twists. At the end, there’s a pondering question over the film’s complex nature: Are we sympathetic as thematically mocked, or dissatisfied over the payoff’s conclusively astute commentary? (B) Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/09/24 Full Review Jeffrey P Has some originality and style, and that’s usually enough to maintain focus. On top of that, it does little to confuse or lose the viewer and the contrasting chemistry between the two leads works well. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/26/24 Full Review Audience Member It’s violent, but it’s also classic. A classical Cage movie. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/24/24 Full Review George Edward G Definitely one of Nicolas Cage best performance. Love how unhinged and chaotic he's in this movie. The ending really does make you feel sympathy for the devil. Best villain but not really the villain role ever. 10/10 and a 5 star.Just sad people don't understand this movie as much as I did it doesn't deserve anything lower than a 6/10 or lower than a 3 star Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/08/24 Full Review Cesar C Entertainful and wild Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/03/24 Full Review Read all reviews
